With the FIFA 2010 World Cup starting on the 11th of June, many football fans will be heading out to South Africa, to enjoy the tournament. It is important that you don't travel abroad without ensuring that you've had the right vaccinations. City Doc offers a range of travel clinics based in London and across the UK. They offer state-of-the-art surroundings, experienced practitioners and competitive pricing making them the perfect choice.
For travel to South Africa it is recommended that you ensure that you are fully up to date with your standard British immunisation courses (standard childhood vaccines and any specialised for you personally i.e. Hepatitis B for Healthcare workers).
It is also recommended that you take a course or boosters for diphtheria; tetanus; hepatitis A; influenza A (H1N1). Sometimes it may also be advised that you receive a course of vaccinations against tuberculosis; hepatitis B; rabies; cholera; typhoid. However, these are based on the type of activities you plan to partake in, for the purposes of the World cup they may not be necessary.
For UK travellers entering South Africa via a transit flight from Nairobi, Kenya, will require to show an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis against yellow fever. It is also advised that you take precautions against Malaria, such as a course of anti-malarials and avoid mosquito bites.
Of special note for people travelling to the World Cup is the vaccination against Influenza A (H1N1) as it is spread via airborne droplets among crowded populations and in enclosed spaces. Transmission may also occur through direct contact with respiratory secretions and infected individuals. Travellers to the Southern Hemisphere during the influenza season (April to September) may be at risk of infection. Travellers exposed to crowded conditions (e.g. cruise travel, public transport, large gatherings, tour groups) are at greater risk. Ask your immunisation specialist, to see if you need extra protection against this threat.
CityDoc is a registered yellow fever centre and is able to dispense anti-malarials directly from our in house pharmacy for your added convenience. Their pre-travel consultations are with experienced staff that will assess the impact of any pre-existing medical conditions on your vaccine requirements. They also have the full range of travel vaccines in stock including rarer vaccines such as Japanese Encephalitis.
Getting the correct vaccinations can ensure that your trip of a life time to the World Cup 2010 is memorable for all the right reasons. City Doc currently has over 20 travel clinics across the UK, for more information visit their Travel Clinic page.
